Next time you have a hangover, consider using a leaf necklace. All kidding aside, this is what suggests an ancient recipe to cure hangovers, revealed in a Greek text analyzed recently.

According to the papyrus written in Greek, whom suffered from hangover should gather leaves of a shrub called Chamaedaphne Alexandrian (Alexandrian laurel), and use the leaves, tied in a cord around his neck. This plant was used in Greek and Roman times to crown distinguished athletes, orators and poets.

According to a publication of the American portal 'LiveScience', the plant was known for a supposed ability to relieve headaches, but if it really worked - even more in a headache caused by hangover - is still a doubt.

This papyrus, with 1900 years old, is one of more than 500,000 similar documents that were found in the ancient Egyptian city of Oxyrhynchus by researchers Bernard Grenfell and Arthur Hunt, about a century ago. Study and publish articles on all these papyri are an arduous task, it takes a good amount of time - so far, more than a century.

The volume 80 of the studies was published recently, bringing studies and texts deciphered of more than 30 medical papyri found at Oxyrhynchus, including the one that opened this article.

Recently published, this volume represents the largest collection of medical papyri brought to the public. The collection includes medical texts and treatments for a wide variety of diseases such as hemorrhoids, ulcers, dental problems and even some fragments talking about surgery on the eye.
